Dental Stools

Your stool doesn’t require the financial investment that other items in the treatment room do yet it’s one of the most important purchases.  Used 100% of the time by you (and your assistant) and used in all procedures and exams.  It must provide a stable working platform that provides  you and your staff with comfort, reliability, and limits adverse health effects.  The following 6 tips give you a leg up when in the market for a used dental stool.

1. Seat

  • Contoured edge for circulation in the legs
  • Comfortable and plush for extended sessions
  • Embraces the thighs rather than constricts them from all positions
  • Foam still plush with plenty of life

2. Adjustments

  • Height meets your minimum and maximum requirements
  • Lower back support adjustments to accommodate varying body types of operators
  • Ease of adjustment — Can it be adjusted with one hand or do you have to rotate a knob and adjust with two hands?
  • Does the lift cylinder support an adequate amount of weight?  You’ll find some used stools that sink once you’re seated.  We test all of our stools by sitting in them and bouncing slightly.

3. Casters

  • 5 Caster design is mandatory.  There’s still 4 caster stools floating around out there that should be relegated to a hobbyists workshop or the scrap heap of history.
  • Protective cover.  If the casters are exposed they will attract debris like floss which can get tangled and cause mobility issues.  A protective cover also preserves the chair’s aesthetic by keeping scuffs from the casters themselves if the chair clunks into a cabinet, base of exam chair or other surface.
  • Double caster, ball caster?  Select casters for your floor space so you can ensure a smooth rolling action.  If you have higher carpet you may consider larger double casters.  Adec’s double caster design has an excellent reputation for usability.

Provides proper posture and accommodates the increased vertical height required by your assistants.

Upholstery

  • Check for scratches, marring or irreparable blemishes.
  • Availability – are replacements available on the market if you have to recover the chair?  We offer upholstery services on stools and chairs and can match nearly every manufacturer color out there.
  • Seamless surface for easy aseptic cleaning

Also make sure your stool doesn’t tip easy, provides easy to use adjustments, supports proper posture and brings the correct aesthetic to your operatory.

The two most popular brands of stools are Pelton & Crane and Adec which provide the features detailed above.  Other brands include Belmont, Brewer, Royal, Relaxadent and more.
